Description
Silene californica was split up into two subspecies S. laciniata ssp. californica and S. laciniata ssp. laciniata. This is the southern California form that grows from SLO county down into Mexico. This form is taller and more open, but with the same abundant bright orangey-red flowers that are loved by hummingbirds. It's very easy to grow and will reseed readily. Tolerates many conditions and has low water needs. Usually grows in rocky soils in the wild. Would look really great in a meadow or peeking out between other perennials. Will need full sun by the coast, but is fine with partial shade anywhere else.
