Agrostis pallens - Seashore Bentgrass

Description

One of the more popular of our native grasses for lawn replacement.  Spreads and reseeds to form a mat, which can either be mown or left to grow for a more natural, meadowy look.  This grass is small with thin, bright green blades and delicate, airy little flower heads that come up in spring.  Needs summer water to stay green year-round, but much less than a conventional lawn.  Without any supplemental water this grass will go summer-dormant and come back with the rains.  Can actually take a bit of foot traffic.  This grass likes full sun to part shade and will really thrive in a more moderate climate, but it may not be the best option for a blazing hot inland locale.  Now marketed by sod and turf companies as a lower water option, it's dependable!
