Description
A white flowered selection of the normally blue-flowered Foothill Penstemon- sometimes white flowered mutations occur in the wild, and this one is from Glendora Mountain Road outside of Los Angeles. We've all taken this home to plant in our gardens and concur that it is absolutely gorgeous, and tough as nails. Penstemon heterophyllus do not like wet feet and won't tolerate consistent irrigation, however, they are very drought tolerant and will be happy as clams in the dryest and hottest part of your garden. This plant would be perfect for a moon garden, which would be a stunning theme to recreate with natives. Perhaps paired with Erigeron glaucus 'White Lights', Artemisia pycnocephala 'David's Choice', Achillea millefolium, white Mimulus, or really any grass could be a great combo. We wondered if hummingbirds would favor this flower due to it's lack of color.... so we watched quietly to see, and discovered that they love it as much as we do
