Description
'Santa Ana Cardinal' was introduced by the Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden in 1958 by a Dr. Lee Lenz. A wonderful and tough hybrid between H. maxima and H. sanguinea, its basal foliage is composed of florets of round, lobed leaves, which are a beautiful verdant green. Foliage reaches about a foot and half tall by three feet wide while flower stalks of stunning little red flowers shoot up about two feet tall in April, looking like a galaxy of rosy stars. This plant prefers a shady spot, but isn't too picky about soil type or water. She'll tolerate a bit of sun on the coast.
