Description
The Iris-leaved Rush occurs all over California in a huge variety of different plant communities. I have seen it growing in foothill woodland meadows in Santa Clara County, though it is known generally as a wetland-riparian plant, thus making a striking addition to a pond or bog garden. It is stunning with its green sword shaped leaves and clusters of tiny star-like flowers which fade from green into rust mid summer. It will reach about 3 feet tall and spread to form a thicket... keeping it in a submerged container is probably best for a small garden. Its spreading habit makes it great for erosion control, however. Provide a fair amount of moisture and sun to bright shade in your garden. Deer resistant.
