Rhododendron macrophyllum - California Rose-Bay

Description

California Rose-Bay grows in moist coniferous forests of the coast ranges. Growing from 3 to 20 feet in height, it can be a beautiful evergreen shrub for a shaded site in a coastal garden. Flowering is in May and June when masses of large pink to rose-purple flowers open at the branch tips. It needs an acid soil, and summer moisture and humidity to thrive. Ferns, wild ginger and redwood sorrel would be appropriate companions.
