Description

Not really a fir, this false hemlock can be distinguished from the firs by its unique cone, which has peculiar 3-pronged narrow bracts that extend between the cone scales. This is a fast growing tree and is valued as a Christmas tree. The bark is smooth and gray in youth, becoming thick and corky and deeply fissured with age. It is very fibrous and can withstand fire. Its abundant light seed makes it one of the first conifers to emerge in a burned area. It is widespread in mixed conifer forests throughout California, Oregon and Washington.
