Dryopteris filix mas ssp. 'Robusta' - Male Fern

Description

'Robusta' is a compact selection that will stay 18"-24" high. Easy to cultivate. Does well in neutral to acid soil, rich in humus. Likes shady conditions, good drainage, and moisture. Cold hardy, can survive long periods below freezing. May or may not lose its fronds in winter. Vigorous flush of new fronds in spring. This species is a commonplace wood fern in Europe and is also found in scattered locations in North America. It prefers to grow in limestone areas. Male fern is grown commercially as an anthelminthic, to expel worms.
