Description
C. thyrsiflorus var. griseus is a low growing coastal variety of our native blueblossom and it goes by the common name of Carmel creeper. There are multiple well known selections of this plant including the popular 'Yankee Point', which is a little shorter. 'Bamico' is especially beautiful I think, growing 3'-4' feet tall and spreading to 6' it acts less like a groundcover and more like a small shrub. Vibrant blue flower clusters contrast a very broad, deep green leaf. Carmel creeper are popular in the garden because they're fast growing and can handle some irrigation, which is generally not true of most Ceanothus. This plant takes full sun in milder coastal climates, but will need light shade if you're in a hot inland locale. Not deer resistant unfortunately, but loved by the bees and butterflies (both adults and caterpillars).
