Description

The Red Alder may be 15-25 meters tall(45-60'), or in poor locations it may even be shrub-like. The smooth bark is thin, very light gray, with reddish inner bark. The male catkins open to be 10-15 cm long, the cone usually 2-2.5 cm. It grows on stream banks and marshes below 500 feet in mixed evergreen forests and redwood forests from Alaska south through the Santa Barbara area.
