This striking plant is native to stream banks and moist areas in the forests of the coast ranges from Santa Barbara to Humboldt County. It likes regular water and light shade. It spreads slowly, forming large colonies in damp shady places. This plant goes dormant in late summer, and reappears larger the following year.
