This dense shrub reaches as much as 20' high and 8' wide. It gets its name from the long silky catkins that make a show in the garden starting when most shrubs are dormant, from December to April. Found in the coast ranges it is drought tolerant but adapts well to summer water. Planted in full sun or light shade it is a moderate grower, and soon makes a good screen or background plant.
