Description

A perennial sunflower that comes from a thick woody tap root, Mules Ears are only a foot or two tall, but its eight inch flowers can be seen adorning sunny hillsides from April thru May throughout the Bay area. Bright light and good drainage are this showy plant's only requirements. Occasional water will keep its big fuzzy leaves looking fresh into the summer, after which it will go completely dormant reapearing more vigorously each winter. The plant contains an aromatic oil which California Indians used medicinally for rheumatic pains, burns and sores.
