Description
Our most popular treelike manzanita, this adaptable, (relatively) fast growing selection was made from a hybrid that occured in the garden of computer scientist Dr. Cuthbert Hurd in Portola Valley. 'Dr, Hurd' will reach about 12-15 feet tall and wide, with an open, upright form that shows off its sculptural maroon branches beautifully. Stunning when lit from beneath. The leaves on this plant are very broad- perhaps the largest and broadest of any Manzanita we carry, and they are a stunning lime-green color. White flowers in large clusters appear between January and March, attracting bees and hummingbirds. Deer will eat young leaves on this plant, so it may need to be protected in early life. Loves full sun and is very drought tolerant once established. Likely will not thrive in coastal locations as it is susceptible to fungal issues in a moist climate.
