Description

Almost evergreen, unusually tolerant of direct seashore conditions or highly alkaline desert soils. Flowers and seeds attract birds. Fire resistant. Native to CA coast south of San Francisco inland to Riverside county. Grows 5-7' high; can be hedge sheared. Plant 4-6' apart for solid cover. Seeds, leaves and young shoots are edible, however it can absorb selenium if it is present in the soil, so caution is advised. Ashes have been used as substitute for baking powder.
