Description
The gracillimum variety of our golden currant is native specifically to the Coast and Transverse ranges, so if you live in the Bay Area this will be your preferred form. This plant often grows near to creeks and seeps and, though drought tolerant once established, it will want a similar situation in the garden with mild sun or light shade and a bit of supplemental water if there's no steady source. Proper drought tolerant training includes a thorough watering intially, then tapering off to occasional deep waterings. Usually grows to about 5 or 6 feet tall and 6ish feet wide, though it can get larger (and can be pruned smaller). Absolutely stunning in bloom, with drooping clusters of yellow flowers that fade to red before the glossy, amber-colored currants appear. Fruit deepens from a golden color into a dark burgundy by the end of the season- the best tasting of the native currants! Beautiful specimens of this plant can be seen at Rancho San Antonio County Park off Highway 280. If you want a plant that can withstand the high elevations and cold temps of the Sierras you will want R. aureum v. aureum instead.
