This widely used shrub occurs in many habitats from central Calif. to British Columbia. In the Bay Area it is generally found in riparian habitats. This variety has long panicles of pale pink to rose-purple flowers in late winter. In the garden they are especially nice around oaks because of their drought tolerance or as a foundation shrub, specimen, or even informal hedge.
