Until the 1970's all redwoods at nurseries were propagated by seed, each seedling inheriting a slightly different set of characteristics. Since then named cultivars have been available. These have certain definite growth and color characteristics and are propagated vegetatively. Sequoia sempervirens 'Aptos Blue' sports heavy blue-green foliage and an upright habit with small weeping side branches. Needs summer fog, can grow as much as 4' a year.
